Honor Magic5 Pro – meet the new king of flagship market


After months of speculation, leaks, and many teasers, Honor finally took the wraps off its Honor Magic5 series. The Chinese brand took to the MWC 2023 in Barcelona to present a series of new products for the international market. With a focus on creating “Tech to Inspire”, Honor has presented the new flagship Honor Magic5 Pro and a vanilla variant. It brings the latest set of advanced technologies that make a good flagship. The new device will take on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series and will come to conquer the preference of global consumers. Besides the new flagships, Honor also presented the Honor Magic Vs for the international markets.

According to the brand, the Honor Magic5 series “comes with intuitive tech solutions to improve the daily lives of everyone” said George Zhao, CEO of Honor Device Co, Ltd. He further adds that the “Honor Magic5 Pro, is an all-rounder flagship, that comes to push industry benchmarks in every aspect of user experience.”

Honor Magic5 Pro features a unique design and tops a series of benchmarks

The Honor Magic5 Pro arrives as the brand’s effective 2023 flagship that will take on the likes of Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Xiaomi 13 Pro. The phone introduces a new gorgeous design for the brand, unprecedented performance, and beats a series of industry benchmarks. Talking about the design, it packs an “Eye of Muse” design with a so-called “Star Wheel Triple-Camera” system. The display also boasts a gorgeous design.

The king of DXOMark

We are not joking when we say this phone already tops a series of benchmarks. Starting with the display, the phone’s 6.81-inch LTPO display managed to top DXOMark’s display ranking. With a gorgeous design, stunning quality, and impressive 2,160 Hz PWM dimming tech, the display reached the top of DXOMark’s ranking with 151 points.

Similar to the display, the Honor Magic5 Pro’s camera system also tops the DXOMark’s camera score. The phone brings a triple-camera setup with three 50 MP shooters and a series of advanced features. There is an Ultra Fusional Computational Optics which is an algorithm to improve the clarity on the “super zoom” modes. The phone is capable of 3.5x optical zoom to 100x hybrid zoom. It also brings a new Millisecond Falcon Capture algorithm, that allows users to capture complex scenes with ease and clarity. Last but not least, we have the AI Motion Sensing Capture 7. It can detect the highest point of a jump to capture the frame in ultra-high definition. This technology has been used in the latest Guinness Record-breaking “Between the Legs Slam Dunk”. This advanced camera scores 152 points at the DXOMark’s camera tests.

Technical specifications and features

I know you all are here to see the hardware of the new flagship, and we’ll list the specs of this flagship. Can it withstand a market full of competitiveness? Well, the specifications make it a true beast. The Honor Magic5 Pro packs a 6.81-inch LTPO Quad-Curved “Floating” screen with 2,848 x 1,312 pixels of resolution. The panel has up to 120 Hz Adaptive Refresh. It covers the DCI-P35 color gamut and has HDR10+ support. It also comes with the PWM 2160Hz dimming for low-light environments, and 1,800 nits of peak brightness. The display has a top-left pill-shaped punch-hole for the selfie camera and 3D sensor. It boasts a Frame Rate Boost tech from a dedicated display chip. This chip will ensure the best frame rate without stressing the GPU. The display is certified by TUV Rheinland certification which assures Low Blue Light emittance.

Premium Camera Optics and Advanced Zoom

In terms of dimensions, the Honor Magic5 Pro has 162,9 x 76.7 x 8.77 mm and weighs 219 grams. The phone is also rated for IP68 water and dust resistance. Moving around to the back, we have the so-called “Star Wheel” Triple Camera system. This setup has a 50 MP wide camera with a bright f/1.6 aperture and a 1/1.12-inch Sensor size. There is also a 50 MP Ultrawide camera with 122º FOV. Last but not least, we have a 50 MP Periscope Telephoto camera with f/3.0. It supports 3.5 optical zooms and 100x digital zoom. It’s a Sony IMX858 sensor. The setup comes with smart features like the AI Motion Sensing Capture and the Milisecond Falcon Capture. It gets the aid of a dToF Laser Focus, Multi-Spectrum Color Temperature Sensor, and a Flicker Sensor. The phone supports 4K@60fps video recording.

The selfie snapper is a 12 MP main camera with f/2.4 aperture and it comes along with a 3D depth camera. This feature boosts some visual effects in selfie photography and is also used for 3D Face ID scanning.

A beastly performance for the Honor Magic5 Pro

Under the hood, both the Honor Magic5 and the Honor Magic5 Pro pack the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. That’s Qualcomm’s latest chipset for the flagship market which makes it a tough device to beat in 2023. The chipset brings the Adreno 740 which is boosted by the GPU Turbo X technology. The Honor Magic5 Pro will bring excellent performance for gaming tasks without sacrificing efficiency. It comes with up to 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 4.0 storage.

The Honor Magic5 Pro draws its power from a 5,100 mAh battery with 66W fast charging. Moreover, there is also 50W wireless charging. Other features include NFC, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, Stereo Speakers, Dual-Sim 5G, and eSIM support. Honor promises stable and fast connections thanks to its unique Antenna Architecture. The phone also boasts the “IMAX Enhanced” certification, making it a decent device for multimedia.  As expected, the flagship introduces MagicOS 7.1 world which is based on Android 13. It brings a series of Privacy-related features including AI Privacy Call 2.0. The phone has a Security chipset that will work along with the OS to improve the user experience.

The spotlight of the event was clearly set at the Honor Magic5 Pro, However, the vanilla is also a decent toned-down offering. It comes with the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU, but we have a smaller 6.73-inch AMOLED screen. It has a 54 MP main camera, 50 MP ultrawide, and 32 MP telephoto camera. This camera setup supports up to 50x Digital Zoom.

The Magic5 Pro brings a Dual-TEE security system co-developed with Qualcomm. It offers hardware-level protection for users’ data. There is a dedicated security chip that provides max security for passwords and biometrics like the Face ID and Fingerprint. We also have the aforementioned AI Privacy Call 2.0. It comes to protect you from any potential sound leaking. Moreover, there is a Sound Energy Spatial Control tech. It generates opposite sound waves to prevent sound leakage for private phone calls. Further, it improves the experience for the user so the calls will always be crisp, but at the same time, it will make them secure even if you’re in a quiet but crowded environment like an elevator. People will not catch the caller’s voice.

MagicOS 7.1 also brings features to improve performance and ensure battery efficiency. It brings features like Magic-Ring for multi-device management, and Magic Text for Intelligent text recognition. We don’t know exactly how many updates the Honor Magic5 Pro will get, but we expect Honor to disclose it in the future.

Honor Magic5 Pro

The Honor Magic5 Pro will sell in Black, Orange, Coral Purple, Glacier Blue, and Meadow Green. The vanilla Honor Magic5 will sell in Black and Blue. The new flagships will be up for sale starting from Q2, 2023. So we’ll have to until April, at the very least. The Honor Magic5 will start at €899 with 8GB/256GB.
